(16 October 2004) - It took three years to Gene, Betty and Tom Burkland to rebuild their twin engined streamliner after the crash at World of Speed in 2001. The car reappeared at World of Speed a month ago but could not run, and actually made its first run just yesterday.
The long hard work payed back, because this morning Tom qualified at 418+ MPH and backed up the run in the afternoon setting the new record, which was held by the late Nolan White. Tom Burkland is now the fastest man on land on a piston engined vehicle (although the FIA International record still belongs to Al Teague).
(Information taken from www.landracing.com, were you will find a full report of World of Speed, full details of Tom Burkland's runs and many additional pictures of the car).
The car has been rebuilt much the same as it was before the accident, although, If you look carefully, you will notice a few subtle changes, mainly in the cockpit area, which has been made even safer than it was before the accident. The eagle on the sides is also slightly different than before, the air outlets are now painted in the main body color etc.
